In a small village of Gujarat, a girl was born to Hasmukh. But just at the time of her birth Hasmukh’s wife died. The girl was blamed for her mother’s death. She was declared bad omen by the village. Eventually, Hasmukh left the village and the girl was left to her destiny. The girl’s grand mother raised her in all the adversities. When the girl, Bhakti grew into a beautiful young lady, her grandmother took her to Ahmedabad where her father lived with his second wife. Here, when his wife ill treated Bhakti and her grandmother, they took shelter in a temple.

In the city of Ahmedabad, the Nanavatis were a famous family. Devki was the head of this family. Her husband Purushottam Das had passed away a few years ago. Out of her six sons viz. Jayant, Sanat, Mukesh, Ketan, Gautam and Mohan, five were married. Mohan who was loved by everyone in the family was very obedient and honest. He had tremendous respect for his mother, brothers and definitely his bhabhis ie. the jethanis viz. Manjula, Parul, Alpa, Jalpa and Rajeshwari. He doted on his bhabhis to the extent that he could hear no ill against them.

The jethanis, too, showered their love and affection for them. But this love of theirs’ was only to keep him under their control. They were eyeing a substantial amount of money that was in Mohan’s name hence they did not want to let him go away from their control. In this endeavour of theirs, they got him married to Bhakti who wss a simple village girl so that they could easily be kept under their influence.

The jethjanis didn’t want Mohan to come under Bhakti’s influence lest he slips out of their control. Despite the jethanis’ efforts to keep them separated, Mohan and Bhakti come together and become inseparable. Devki, of course had tremendous liking for both.

The jethanis were also instrumental in getting their sister-in-law married to an imposter called Deepak, which was the cause of Paurushottam Das’ death.

Years later, Daksha’s home coming proved to be fatal for the jethanis when they lost out on the substantial sum after the brothers had tracked the amount and transferred it in Devki’s name. The jethanis then wrecked revenge on Bhakti and Mohan by framing Mohan in a false case of cheating with the help of Deepak.

Eventually, the family misunderstood Mohan and asked Bhakti and him to leave the house. They are given the concession of living in the out house. Bhakti and Mohan lived in the outhouse bereft of luxuries they had enjoyed so far and hoped that someday the family would know the truth.

Despite the jethanis attempts to thwart Mohan and Bhakti’s efforts to start their own business, they started their ‘papad’ business with the help of a little boy called Gopal (assumed to be a living incarnate of Laddoo Gopal, Gopal had once come into Bhakti’s life in a crisis situation and bailed her out of it and left mysteriously)
Enthusiastic that they have been asked to supply papads, they name it “Laddoo Gopal Papad’. Now that Mohan and Bhakti have decided to dabble in the papad making business, to eke out a living, the jethanis try to create problems for Mohan, but as luck would have it Mohan and Bhakti’s lives change for the better.

The jethanis had again tried to bring Mohan and Bhakti’s papad making business to a standstill but in the process the plan boomeranged on them. Ironically, the infighting among the jethanis led them to get exposed before the family.

The brothers ordered the jethanis to leave Nanavati House but Devki announced that the jethanis would have to live in the outhouse. As a case of role reversals, the jethanis started their life in the outhouse devoid of luxuries. Mohan and Bhakti came back at Nanavati House and eventually Devki handed over the keys of the house to Bhakti.

Meanwhile, as the jethanis were working as maids in Nanavati House, as a ploy to get back to Nanavati House, Mohan got in touch with Devki's brother-in-law (Raghunath) from Canada who visits Nanavati House with family (Dimpi – Wife, Tarun – Son, Chandramukhi – Daughter-in-law) in tow after years.
What ensued was a property drama in the Nanavati household, where the Nanavatis were on the brink of losing their property and business and rendered homeless. In the prevailing crisis, the brothers and the jethanis start bonding with each other and the jethanis go through a transformation. That’s when it was revealed that the ongoing property drama was planned by Mohan and Bhakti in association with Raghunath and family to reunite the brothers and the jethanis.
As Bhakti’s birthday neared, Devki decided to gift her something substantial. On her birthday, the jethanis found that Devki had handed over the rights of the family business and property to Bhakti. The jethanis reacted differently to Devki’s decision. Parul, Alpa and Jalpa welcomed Devki’s decision but Manjula and Rajeshwari had reservations about Devki decision.

Meanwhile, the infighting among the jethanis grew in leaps and bounds which lead to the disintegration of the family with the jethanis shifting out of Nanavati House.

The brothers and the jethanis fond it difficult to cope with the pressure of a nuclear family set up. Meanwhile, Mohan and Bhakti got the fragmented family back home to Nanavati House. But Manjula come back home much against her wish.
Manjula’s transformation happened when the jethanis taunt Manjula for her mis-deeds and Bhakti saves her from being exposed before the family. Finally, Bhakti handed over the keys of the house to Manjula.

As the family geared up for the kite festival, the bahus of the house decided to compete with their husbands. In course of the game the bahus emerged winners while the kite fell into the hands of a little girl called Shikha who carried a note addressed to the brothers claiming that she is a part of the Nanavati family, thus leaving the brothers shocked.
Even as the jethanis tried to find out the identity of the anonymous lady in question, in her own meticulous way Bhakti managed to find out that Shikha’s mother’s name is Padmini Nanavati.

The family got shocked when Bhakti informed them that Shikha is Mohan’s daughter. Padmini as an unwed mother of Shikha evoked sympathy from the family by appearing to be terminally ill. Though Manjula was skeptical about Padmini’s ill intentions, Bhakti was sympathetic towards Padmini plight, unaware that Padmini was trying to gain a foot hold in the family. It was revealed to the audience that Padmini has taken recourse to black magic to get close to Mohan.

When the family got the real picture through Manjula that she had kidnapped a pregnant Bhakti, they got her arrested by the cops. Unfortunately, unable to bear the stress, Bhakti passed away giving birth to a baby girl called Astha.

After a generation leap of 17 years, we are introduced to Astha, Mohan and Bhakti’s daughter. Since Bhakti’s death, Mohan has eluded her. Astha grows up to be a beautiful young girl with a mind of a child. All five jethanis (Manjula, Parul, Alpa , Jalpa and Rajeshwari) dote on Astha who considers them as her five mothers, though she is unaware who her biological mother is. Shikha, Astha’s half sister feels wronged because her mother Padmini was sent to jail. Shikha’s attitude towards Astha is cold and sarcastic beyond Astha’s understanding. So much so that she even tries to keep Astha away from Mohan to prevent his attention from getting diverted towards Astha. As the family decides to get Shikha married, she on the rebound projects Astha as the candidate for marriage. It is then revealed that Astha is getting married to Raj who is in a relationship with Shikha.

When Shikha gets to know that Raj has a ‘kundali dosh’ (His first wife would die), Raj says he is marrying Astha to avenge the family’s atrocities on her so that after Astha’s death, he will get married to her. Even as Astha gets married to Raj, she is oblivious of Raj and Shikha’s affair. Raj, his aunt Rasila and Shikha now decide to eliminate Astha so that they are married soon.
Rasila decides to use Parul as a pawn to eliminate Astha. On the day of the Janmashtami festivities, when Parul asks Astha to bury a talisman for Sweety’s good luck, Raj buries Astha but with the timely help of Gopal, Astha is brought to Kashi’s house in an unconscious state. When Manjula gets to know from Kashi that Astha is with her, she decides to unravel the mystery behind Astha’s sudden disappearance.
